Sweden Is Bringing Back Handwriting - Here's the Research It's Catching Up To

Sweden has spent the last few years quietly walking back a decision that would have sounded unthinkable a decade ago: reversing years of digital-first education policy in favour of handwriting and physical books in the classroom.

For a country that was one of Europe's most aggressive adopters of screens-in-schools, that's a striking U-turn. In 2023, Sweden's Minister of Education, Lotta Edholm, announced the government would reverse an earlier decision that made digital devices mandatory in preschools, and end digital-only learning for children under six altogether. It wasn't a token gesture - the government committed roughly 685 million SEK (around $63m) to printed textbooks that year, with a further 500 million SEK (around $46m) earmarked for 2024-2025.

What Changed in Sweden

The shift is concrete, not symbolic: less screen time in early years classrooms, a renewed focus on handwriting practice, and printed books back at the centre of literacy teaching instead of tablets. It followed a real, measurable decline: in the international PIRLS reading assessment, Swedish fourth-graders' average score dropped from 555 in 2016 to 544 in 2021 - a slide that coincided with the country's most tablet-heavy years of schooling.

That's a significant admission from a country that spent the best part of a decade encouraging the opposite.

The Research Behind the Reversal

None of this is new to cognitive science - Sweden is just acting on it.

  • Handwriting engages more of the brain than typing does. Researchers using EEG and brain-imaging studies - notably out of Norway's NTNU - have found that the act of forming letters by hand activates memory and language networks that tapping a key doesn't touch in the same way.
  • Longhand notes beat typed notes for retention. This Isn't an Argument Against Digital Tools

It's tempting to read a story like this as "screens bad, paper good." That's not the useful takeaway, and it's not what the research actually says either. Digital tools are excellent for the things paper can't do well - instant feedback, adaptive difficulty, spaced repetition that adjusts to what a child actually gets wrong. The problem was never digital practice; it was digital-only practice that quietly dropped handwriting out of the loop altogether.
