Is it really free?
Yes, for now. The class tools are free and tutor accounts get 500 AI credits a month, renewing - free for now, while we work out fair long-term pricing for groups - where a family starts with a one-off 200. There's no card to enter and no trial clock. Credits pay for the practice itself: 2 a word for Pick it, Type it, Write it and Say it, 1 a word for the lighter activities, 10 for a Skills Check, Dictation test or Paper practice sheet. Class lists, assignments, pupil logins and the group report cost nothing. The tutor allowance may change in future - we would tell you before it did. Read how credits work for the full picture.
What happens if I use all 500 credits in a month?
Nothing stops. Once the month's 500 are used, practice draws on any bought or bonus credits you hold, and after that it runs on a grace period until the allowance renews on the 1st or you top up - we'd rather a lesson finished than a pupil stopped mid-word. Assigning lists, pupil logins, the games and every report stay free throughout. If you're regularly running out, tell us: that's exactly the usage data we want.
Do my pupils need email addresses?
No. Bulk-add your roster and Spelling.Live generates a simple username and password per pupil, with optional printable QR login labels for younger children. A pupil who already uses Spelling.Live at home can be added to your class without a second account.
Can my pupils work on paper rather than on screen?
Yes, and it still counts. A dictation test reads the words aloud while the pupil writes them on paper - then you photograph the page and every word is transcribed and marked against the list. If a sheet has already been marked by hand, paper practice reads the ticks, crosses and misspellings from a photo instead. Both feed the same progress record as on-screen practice, and handwriting can be scored at the same time.
Can I run one dictation for the whole group and have the papers marked?
Yes, and the whole pile is marked in one go. Print a QR-coded sheet per pupil, dictate the list once for the room, then scan the pile through the photocopier as a single PDF and upload it. Each page is matched to its pupil by its QR code, transcribed and marked against the words you dictated, and you only review the few the AI was unsure about before saving the class. Can I run more than one group?
Yes - create as many classes as you need and assign different lists with different due dates to each. The group report is per class, so a Tuesday Year 3 group and a Thursday Year 5 group stay separate.
Is it safe for children's data?
It's built as a children's product first: no ads, no free-text child input in analytics, children identified by profile ID rather than name, self-service export and deletion, and a published AI transparency register naming every AI vendor and what's sent to them. Full detail in our privacy notice.
