Questions tutors ask
Is it really free?
Yes. The app and the class tools are free to use, and tutor accounts get 500 AI credits a month instead of the standard 100 per household. There's no card to enter and no trial clock. We're still working out fair long-term pricing based on how tutors actually use it - read how credits work for the full picture.
What happens if I use all 500 credits in a month?
AI actions pause until the allowance resets the following month - practice, lists, games and reports all keep working, because those don't call AI. In practice most of what pupils use is cached and costs nothing. If you're regularly running out, tell us: that's exactly the usage data we want.
Do my pupils need email addresses?
No. Bulk-add your roster and Spelling.Live generates a simple username and password per pupil, with optional printable QR login labels for younger children. A pupil who already uses Spelling.Live at home can be added to your class without a second account.
Can my pupils work on paper rather than on screen?
Yes, and it still counts. A dictation test reads the words aloud while the pupil writes them on paper - then you photograph the page and every word is transcribed and marked against the list. If a sheet has already been marked by hand, paper practice reads the ticks, crosses and misspellings from a photo instead. Both feed the same progress record as on-screen practice, and handwriting can be scored at the same time.
Can I run one dictation for the whole group and have the papers marked?
Yes. The words are read aloud from your device, so you run the dictation once and the whole room writes at the same time - no per-pupil setup, and no reading the list out yourself. Marking is then done for you, one paper at a time: photograph each pupil's page and it's transcribed and marked against the list, landing in that child's own progress and in the group report. There isn't a single bulk upload for a whole set of papers yet, so allow a few seconds per page.
Can I run more than one group?
Yes - create as many classes as you need and assign different lists with different due dates to each. The group report is per class, so a Tuesday Year 3 group and a Thursday Year 5 group stay separate.
Is it safe for children's data?
It's built as a children's product first: no ads, no free-text child input in analytics, children identified by profile ID rather than name, self-service export and deletion, and a published AI transparency register naming every AI vendor and what's sent to them. Full detail in our privacy notice.
