Spelling.Live facts

Spelling.Live is a UK spelling app for children aged 5 to 11. It turns the school spelling list into short daily practice, marks handwriting and paper tests, and names the spelling rule behind each mistake. This page lists the practical facts in one place. Last checked October 2026.

Key capabilities

Getting words in Photograph a school list, paste or type it, add words by voice, or pick a preset: National Curriculum KS1, KS2, 11+ and 42 phonics lists by sound. Every list is safety-checked and spelled the way the child's school spells.
Practising A weekly learning plan with one short activity a day: type it, write it by hand, say it, pick it, look and remember, word meanings, word parts, sentence building and games. Help arrives a step at a time, and spaced repetition brings tricky words back.
Handwriting Write on screen with a finger or stylus. AI reads the writing and checks letter formation, with UK cursive tracing for younger children.
Reports Weekly or monthly progress emails in plain English, a spelling patterns report, a curriculum view mapped to English Appendix 1, a writing journal of what the child actually wrote, and an AI spelling coach.

Schools and tutors

Class setup Import a class from Google Classroom, or from a school MIS through Wonde with MyLogin sign-in, or paste a roster. Pupils get printable logins.
Assigning and marking Assign a list once and it queues into every pupil's plan. Bulk scan marking reads a whole class's paper test in one scan.
Reports Group and curriculum reports for the class. See for schools.

Ages and curriculum

Ages 5 to 11 (Reception to Year 6), with an early-years band and a fluent band.
Curriculum England's National Curriculum for KS1 and KS2, including the statutory word lists and Appendix 1 spelling rules. Parents can also add any school list by photo, paste or typing.
English spelling UK, US, Australian or Indian English, chosen per child.

Connectivity and screen-free practice

Internet An internet connection is needed for spoken audio, AI handwriting and voice checks, and syncing progress. If a save fails because the connection drops, the result is kept on the device and sent again once it is back.
No screen, no wifi The printed practice pack turns your child's own word list into a week of screen-free practice: look-cover-write-check, a crossword or word search, a paragraph and a Friday test. Photograph the marked test to bring the results back into the app. Read more.
Paper tests Paper practice and the Dictation test read a photographed page and mark it. Teachers can mark a whole class with bulk scan marking.

Phonics and spelling patterns

Sound Every word has recorded audio and an example sentence. Homophones such as wait and weight are always read in a sentence.
Diagnosis Each wrong answer is matched to the rule behind it: over 40 phonics rules, plus word structure (prefixes, suffixes, doubling) and spelling rules. Parents see the pattern, not just a score. See the spelling patterns guide.
Practice Typing, handwriting with AI-checked letter formation, saying the word, picking it, word meanings, word parts and games, with spaced repetition bringing tricky words back.

Accessibility and privacy

Accessibility OpenDyslexic and other reading fonts, text size and spacing, colour overlays, slower speech, forgiving handwriting reading and gentler feedback, set per child. See the accessibility statement.
Privacy Made in the UK. We do not sell personal information, and inputs sent to AI providers are not used to train their models. Parents can export or delete a child's data in the app. See the privacy policy and AI transparency.
Recognition Educational App Store Certified, rated 5.0 out of 5 (August 2026). Read the review.
