Dictation test

A real spelling test, run the traditional way: the app reads the words out, your child writes them by hand on paper, and then you photograph the page for instant, accurate marking.

How it works

Tap the 🎧 button on your child's card to start. You'll need to be signed in with cloud sync on.

1. Set it up
Choose which list to test from (or all their words) and how many words - up to 15. The app picks the words that are due for review and orders them for you.
2. The app reads each word aloud
Your child writes each one on numbered paper. They can replay a word, hear it "in a sentence", or ask for its meaning - none of which reveals the spelling. For younger children a "Flash spelling" button briefly shows the word as a scaffold.
3. Photograph the page
Once every word has been read, take a photo of the numbered sheet.
4. The app marks it
Because it already knows which words it read out, it simply reads what your child wrote at each number and marks it against the target - the same way a teacher marks.
5. Review and save
You see a score and a row per word, with what they wrote in an editable box and a ✓/✗ you can override. Nothing is saved until you confirm.

What it records

Into the progress report

Every result is saved to the report - counting towards accuracy, tricky-word ranking and the by-mode breakdown, shown as "Dictation (paper)".

Trickier words come back sooner

Each result feeds the spaced-repetition scheduler, so words your child missed are brought back earlier in future practice.

Misspellings are remembered

What your child wrote for a missed word is stored, so the "wrong answers" view, coach tips and spelling-pattern analysis stay accurate.

Handwriting, if enabled

If handwriting analysis is on for that child, the writing on the page is scored too and added to the Formation/Writing report.

Dictation test or Paper practice?

Both work from a photo, but they point in opposite directions. Paper practice imports a test someone else set and marked - you photograph an already-marked school sheet and the app reads the words, the ticks and the crosses.

The Dictation test is the app setting and marking its own test - it chose and read the words aloud, so the page has only your child's handwriting. That's why it can guarantee the target words, order them by what's due, and mark deterministically rather than interpreting a teacher's marks.

What it costs

Marking the photographed page uses one credit; if handwriting scoring runs as well, that's one more - so up to two credits per page. Reading the words aloud and everything else is free. More on how credits work →
