Parent, child, and tutor account help

How sign-in, invites, and linked child access work in Spelling.Live.

Role overview

Parent

Owns profile setup

Can create children, manage lists, set practice controls, and invite guardians/tutors.

Child (managed)

No email required

Plays under parent account by selecting child profile.

Child (claimed)

Optional own login

Older children can use their own account after invite claim.

Tutor/guardian

Child-specific access

Only sees children they were explicitly linked to.

Editing a child's name & pronoun

Open ๐Ÿ”ง Settings on any child's card on the home screen. A Name field and how should we refer to them? (they/them, she/her, he/him) selector sit at the top of the page, above the practice accordions - change either any time and tap Save name. This is also how an adult's own "Me" profile (from "I'm learning as an adult" in the sign-up wizard) can be given a real name after the fact.

Practice controls - per child

Open Your children (the lock icon on the home screen), expand any child's Practice settings accordion, and customise their experience without changing anything mid-session.

Practice modes

Toggle which modes are available for each child: Pick it (multiple choice), Write it (handwriting), Type it, Relevant letters only (sub-option under Type it), and Say it (voice). Disabled modes are hidden from the child's practice screen automatically.

Writing pad - early years

Control whether ruled lines appear on the handwriting pad, and whether a letter-trace overlay is shown. Choose the trace style: dashed lines (worksheet look) or bubble outlines.

Navigation arrows

Show โ† โ†’ buttons directly on the practice screen so children can move between words themselves - useful when they're working independently.

Flash duration & availability

Sets how long the word is visible when the ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Flash button is tapped. Options: 1, 2, 3, 5, or 8 seconds. Shorter durations suit children who are ready to be challenged; longer durations suit children still building confidence with a word. Flash can also be allowed or switched off separately for Pick it, Write it and Type it - useful as a warm-up aid without it being available once your child is answering for real.

Practice goal

Set to Stretch, Balanced, or Confidence-building from the sign-up wizard or here at any time. It shapes the week's tone and pacing - a stretch goal adds an optional "โญ Practise more" round once the day's required practice is done; confidence and balanced children just see "done," with no push for extra. It does not change which words are selected.

Parent menu lock code

Set an optional numeric code per child. While practising, the Parents button will ask for the code before showing the settings panel - so children can't change modes or skip ahead unsupervised. Once unlocked, the panel stays open until you tap ๐Ÿ”’ Lock menu inside it. Switching to a different child automatically resets the lock.

Word list defaults - per child

Expand the Word lists section on any child's card to control which lists appear on the home screen and which one starts pre-selected.

Default list - select one list as the default. It's automatically pre-selected on the home screen when practice starts, so there's no manual picking each session.
Show / hide lists - toggle individual lists on or off. Hidden lists are removed from the home-screen selector and from "Play All Lists". Useful for archiving older lists without deleting them.
All lists (no preference) - leave this selected to keep the default behaviour: all visible lists are merged into one practice session.

Invitation flow

1. Parent sends invite for a specific child.
2. Invitee opens link and signs in with invited email.
3. Invitation accepted and access is activated.
4. If wrong account opens link, sign out and re-open with correct account.
