A new class, a new teacher and a new spelling list. Four quick steps keep Spelling.Live matched to where your child is now - and nothing from last year is lost.
Four steps each September
1. Update their school year
In 🔧 Settings → About them, change School year and answer whether they are working towards, at or above the expected level for it. The year doesn't move up on its own - it's what you told us.

2. Check their level
If their year and attainment now point to a different level (Early or Fluent), you'll see a suggestion under the level. Nothing changes until you choose to switch.

3. Add the new teacher's list
When the first list comes home, photograph it or type it in. Last year's words don't disappear - any that were still shaky keep coming back through spaced repetition.

4. Run a fresh Skills Check
The Skills Check picks its words from the school year you set, so a new check in September shows where they are against this year's expectations.

What else follows the school year

Matched to their year: Years 1-2, 3-4 or 5-6.
Suggested level
Early or Fluent, which changes things like picture hints and letter tracing. Always your choice.
Their history stays
Progress, reports, badges and the words they've mastered all carry over. Nothing is reset.
For teachers and tutors
Update each pupil's school year from their settings in the same way, and assign this year's lists to the class. Pupils keep the same login, and reprinting login labels doesn't change their passwords. See Teachers & classes.
Common questions
Does my child's year group update automatically?
No. The school year is what you told us, so update it in 🔧 Settings → About them at the start of each school year.
Will my child lose their progress when they move up?
No. All progress, reports and badges stay. Words that were still tricky last year keep coming back until they're secure.
Should I switch them from Early to Fluent?
If their new year and attainment suggest it, the app will say so, but it's your call. Fluent drops automatic picture hints and letter tracing, so switch when they're ready.
