Getting started in 5 minutes

Set up once, then keep daily practice quick and focused.

The photo import flow

The fastest way to start is with a photo. When your child brings home a spelling list from school, point the camera at it — no typing needed.

1. Open spelling.live on your phone or tablet
2. Tap Add list then Take a photo
3. Point the camera at the word list
4. The app extracts the words automatically — check and edit if anything was missed
5. Tap Start practising

Manual setup options

Paste a list

Copy words from an email or document and paste them in.

Type words in

Add words one at a time if you prefer.

Choose from built-in lists

Use the age-band or 11+ word pools already in the app.

Parent best practice

Little and often

Short daily sessions usually beat occasional long sessions. Ten minutes every evening is more effective than an hour on Sunday.

Mirror school lists each week

Upload the list that came home on Friday. Practice is most useful when it matches exactly what the teacher will test.

Prioritise after every test

Mark mistakes right away while you remember them. The next session will target those words first.

Track patterns, not one bad day

Use the progress reports to spot which word patterns keep tripping your child up — double letters, silent letters, -ible vs -able — and adjust what they practise.

Choosing the right level

Early — KS1 and lower KS2. Common words, simpler patterns.
Fluent — Upper KS2 and 11+. Longer words, more complex spelling rules, exam-style vocabulary.
If unsure, start at Fluent and drop to Early if the words feel too hard.
