The Spelling.Live sound chart

Every sound the sound tiles can say, with the spellings children meet for it. Tap a sound to hear it exactly as the app plays it. This is the chart to share with a child's teacher or tutor.

How to read it

  • Main spellings are the ones children meet in Reception to Year 2.
  • Later or rarer spellings come up in older years or a few special words.
  • a-e means a split digraph: the a and the e make one sound, with a letter in between, as in cake.

Common questions

Why are some spellings shown as later or rarer?

The main spellings are the ones children meet in Reception to Year 2. The later ones, such as the ch in chef, come up in older years or in a few special words, so the sound tiles only mix them in when they are part of the word.

Why does a sound sometimes play as a short word?

Sounds that need several letters to say, such as the ai in rain, are recorded as the sound itself. Tap a sound on this chart to hear exactly what the sound tiles play.

Is this the same as Letters and Sounds?

It follows the same ideas, with the sounds grouped the way Letters and Sounds teaches them. It is our own chart, built from the sounds the app plays, so it only lists spellings the app can show.
